Bayern Munich assistant coach Hermann Gerland has revealed how Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to sign Philipp Lahm early in his career.

Gerland was in charge of Bayern B when Lahm was coming through and helped organise a loan spell with VfB Stuttgart.

"It was not easy to arrange. But at Stuttgart, Philipp could play in the Champions League. After three months he was the best player on the field against Manchester United," said Gerland.

"Sir Alex Ferguson wanted him in England, I think that says enough."
