Bechem United President Kingsley Owusu Achau wants slots for home-based players in Black Stars

Bechem United President, Kingsley Owusu Achau is advocating for slots for home-based players in the Black Stars.

The bankroller of the Hunters was speaking on the back of no home-based player making the Black Stars squad for the upcoming 2023 AFCON qualifier against Madagascar.

Some pundits have proposed that a quota system be put in place to ensure home-based players are guaranteed a spot in the senior national team which has been dominated by foreign based players.

Black Stars coach, Chris Hughton has been present in several match venues to monitor local players for future call-ups as he promised in his first engagement with the media as Black Stars coach.

Despite watching several games domestically, none of the players made the cut for the upcoming qualifiers against Madagascar.

In an interview aired on Angel FM monitored by Footballghana.com, Mr. Achau asserted that handing call ups to local players can help prevent the mass departure of players from the domestic league.

“Personally, I think the home-based players are not that bad. For me, if we are inviting 24 players, I suggest the technical team select the best four players in the league, and I believe that will help us in so many ways. It can prevent the mass departure of players from the local scene”

“Our local players won't be in a rush to leave the league when they are given the chance to play for the national team. The 4 slots won’t cause any problem, players leave the league because they do not get the chance to play for the senior national team, but we should also ask why they are being chased to play for Ghana after few months abroad, what is the magic? He quizzed.

“God being so good, we have Chris Hughton, Didi Dramani and George Boateng as coaches for the national team. I know Boateng is a development coach in the UK who is able to teach you all the necessary things you need to know in the football circle, so what is stopping us from maintaining a local team at Prampram so the coaches teach the players all the technique because when they leave the country, they become players whom we chase to play for us”

“Our local players lack some petty skills and techniques, that's why we see them not to be too good. But when they are able to travel outside the country and able to find their feet and are being taught the skills they were lacking, you realize they become very good and very technical when they are playing. Whether we like it or not, the whites are ahead of us so we have to learn from them” he said.
