Benitez calls for Newcastle togetherness

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez says the whole club need to stick together to get out of their difficult situation after failing to end their winless run at Southampton.

For only the second time in the Toon's history, they have failed to win any of their first 10 matches in a season after being held to a goalless draw at St Mary's.

The result moved the Magpies off the bottom of the table but they remain in deep trouble and are 15/8 to be relegated from the top flight.

Newcastle's woeful start has led to speculation over the future of Benitez, who will see his contract expire at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, the supporters continued to express their frustration towards owner Mike Ashley for his perceived lack of investment in the squad during the summer transfer window.

Benitez was eager to remain positive following Saturday's draw at Southampton and says now is the time for everyone associated with the north-east outfit to pull in the same direction.

"We have to consider where we are and where Southampton are," said Benitez.

"In terms of work-rate and team spirit, I can't complain about that. We have to be a little bit better on the ball, but both teams were anxious.

"It's important for us to have the fans behind us. The fans realise it's a difficult situation and they got behind the team."

Newcastle take on Watford next Saturday at St James' Park and are 6/4 to pick up their first win of the season, while the high-flying Hornets are 7/4 and the draw is 23/10.

The Toon are hopeful Salomon Rondon will be fit enough to start that game after his cameo from the bench at Southampton, Benitez claiming the on-loan striker needs to work on his fitness after a recent spell out with a thigh injury.

Benitez said: “It is good to have another striker and more competition. But his match fitness needs to improve by playing games."
