Rafael Benitez has revealed that he promised Dwight Gayle minutes on the pitch if he did well during the training sessions.
Having struggled for regular minutes on the pitch this season, Gayle was finally handed a chance to feature for 90 minutes during Newcastle United's 1-0 defeat against Bournemouth.
Benitez said of Gayle: "Competition's good, and we said to him that if he trains well, he will get chances.
"They have to show it on the pitch."
