Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah to receive salary from MOYS as GNPC terminate sponsorship contract

After two months of working without salary, the coach of the Black Stars, Kwesi Appiah has finally received his money.

The coach would now be smiling to the bank to receive his $35,000 per month salary after a very long wait.

Government through the Ministry of Youth and Sports stepped in to pay the salaries of the coach and his management team, after the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation(GNPC), sponsors of the Black Stars declined to do so because their deal with the Ghana Football Association(GFA) had been terminated.

According to the Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports, Pius Hadzide, the government would take charge of paying the salaries and developing football in the country.

He said under a new deal signed between the GNPC and the Ministry, the latter is not obliged to pay the salaries of the Black Stars management team, but rather support the development of sports in various ways.

"The GNPC is unable to redeem at this point, the contract it has with the GFA as far as being regular sponsors of the Stars is concerned. Hence the GNPC has agreed to partner the Ministry for the development of sports, which resulted in giving $1.5 million for that purpose," he stated on Accra-based Citi FM.

He added that the Youth and Sports Ministry now has the obligation to pay the salaries and the signing-on fee of the coach and other members of the technical team.

"We have begun doing that and would continue by finding money from other sources that are relevant to assist government with those amount,"he stated.
