Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has expressed his thoughts on rebuilding the Ghanaian national football team for the long term, following their disappointing performances in the recent African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments.

Addo shared his insights ahead of Ghana's upcoming FIFA international friendly against Nigeria in Marrakech on Friday.

Ghana has struggled in the last two AFCONs, failing to progress beyond the group stage. In the 2023 edition held in Ivory Coast, Ghana exited with just two points, while in the previous tournament in Cameroon, they managed only one point.

In an interview with Ghana Football Association Communications, Addo acknowledged the team's current low point but emphasized the need for honest self-assessment.

Addo noted that the gap between African nations is narrowing, making it difficult to predict outcomes based on perceived team strength.

The coach revealed that he and his staff have plans to increase Ghana's winning probability.

"Truly if you look at the data, we are at a very, very low point. But obviously we were very, very unlucky how we went out of the African Cup of Nations. I think in Africa the countries move closer together, it wasn’t like a Cup of Nations where we saw like this team or that team is better than the other so it’s still quite close but we have to be honest to ourselves," he said

"In the last two AFCON’s we didn’t do so well, we had problems with the so called little countries and this is one of our targets to get better in these games, to dominate these games, in the end it is impossible to predict these games but the aim of the coaching staff is to increase our winning probability and for this we have ideas and plans that we want to use every time that we get together to work on these ideas and to execute them on the field," he added.
