Bolt impresses Mariners

Usain Bolt has what it takes to "make it" at Central Coast Mariners, according to defender Antony Golec.

The eight-time Olympic gold medallist has started a six-week stint with the Gosford club ahead of the new A-League season.

After just two light training sessions, Golec says it's clear the Jamaican has enough belief and confidence in himself to succeed.

He's got that winning mentality and you have to have that when you're the best.

So far, the 32-year-old has not been involved in intense skills sessions or mini-games for teammates to get much of a gauge of whether he has the ability to play in the A-League.

Golec, though, said of him: "He knows what he wants, he's so determined ... he has so much self-belief and confidence that he's going to make it.

"That's what you need as an athlete. He's got six weeks to prove not just to the club but to everyone around the world that he is good enough; if he wants it, he'll get it.

"He's done it time and time again, I have no doubt he'll do it in football," added Golec. "He's got that winning mentality and you have to have that when you're the best."

Golec said the Mariners were looking forward to seeing what Bolt could do if someone played a ball over the top to find out how quickly he would get to it.

Bolt, who is aiming to use his time with Central Coast to secure a playing deal, won't take part in a trial match this weekend against Newcastle Jets.

But he is still in line to feature in another pre-season hit-out against a Central Coast select team next Friday, which has proved a big draw in terms of advance ticket sales.

Central Coast are 25/1 to win the 2019 Grand Final.

The Mariners are 23/10 to win their first game against Brisbane, who are 1/1 with the draw 14/5.
