Bookmaker Reluctant to Pay Out Punter's 125/1 Bet in Barcelona's Historic Champions League Comeback

Published on: 09 March 2017

Anyone watching Wednesday night's historic, bewildering Champions League game between Barcelona and PSG will have noticed that Edinson Cavani evidently struck the post in the second half.

Anyone, that is, apart from BetVictor, who appear to have a very different description of what exactly constitutes 'hitting the post'.

One seemingly lucky punter placed a bet on Lionel Messi to score a penalty, Edinson Cavani to hit the post and Barcelona to qualify.

BetVictor were perfectly happy to price his bet up to 125/1, although they were slightly less cooperative when the gamble came in.

So Cavani hit the woodwork then?

Their claims that "the ball went out of play after he hit the woodwork, under our rules, it has to stay in play" caused understandable bemusement, although they eventually paid out the £625 as a"goodwill gesture". How generous.

@BetVictor @davidreid_88 hey bet victor did messi have to do the Macarena dance before he took the pen so it counts as a pen scored?? Conmen

Hi @BetVictor Man United win, btts, 4+corners each team and Paul Pogba to hit the woodwork then go out of play #priceitup #requestabet

Despite our rules on woodwork bets, we have decided to pay last night's #PriceItUp bet as a winner. We will publish a statement soon.

They later made clear their interpretation of what counts as a post hit:˜"For any bets involving players hitting the woodwork, the following rule will be applied: 'The ball must make contact with the woodwork and come back in play from an attempt on the opponent's goal during active play. Shots that hit the woodwork on their way into the goal will count'."
