Cherries centre-back Nathan Ake had given the hosts an early lead, before Ryan Betrand equalised after 15 minutes with a well taken solo effort.

And in the second-half, Rodriguez took the game away from the home side, tapping home from close range for his first goal, before sealing the game after 85 minutes in emphatic style.

The opening goal cameafter just six minutes, Bournemouth defender Ake stealing in at the back post tomeet Jack Wilshere's curling cross and head accurately into the bottom corner.

The visitors had failed to really get going in the early exchanges, but quickly found themselves levelcourtesy of an excellent solo goal. Left-back Bertrand drove into the box and, on his left foot, fired past Artur Boruc from a relatively acute angle.

It was a first 20minutes that typified Eddie Howe'semphasis on playing expansive, attacking football, although chances began to appear less frequently as the teams settled.

Southampton's Nathan Redmond miscued an attempted side footed shot with time and space after half an hour, which proved to be the last notable opportunity of the half.

But the Saints were in front only two minutes after the break. Substitute Steven Davis was set free by a superbSofiane Boufalback heel, and- with his first impact off the bench - set up Rodriguez to tap into an empty net.

Bournemouth had been shaken by the away side's lively start to the second-half, and it was the visitorsthat looked most likely to get the next goal. Rodriguez came close again but his effortwas blocked by Boruc, before Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg had a driven shot cleared off the line.

The Cherries, in contrast to the first-half, had barely been in the game for the majority of the second-half, shut out by an organised and effective Southampton unit.

An equaliser didn't seem forthcoming for Bournemouth as the contest entered its latter stages, and the game was put to bed in stunning fashion by Rodriguez.

The striker completed his brace with a perfectly struck half volley on the turn, leaving Boruc helpless and emphatically firing Southampton to a well earned derby win.

Victory took the Saints up to seventh in the Premier League standings, while Bournemouth remain in tenth.
