Bournemouth 3-2 West Ham: King Nets Hat-Trick as Cherries Edge Thriller to Claim First Win of 2017

Published on: 10 March 2017

A Joshua King hat-trick inspired Bournemouth to their first win of 2017 as they recovered from two first-half penalty misses to seal a dramatic 3-2 victory over West Ham United on Saturday afternoon.

A topsy-turvy encounter looked set to finish all square, as goals from Michail Antonio and Andre Ayew, either side of a King brace, looked to have punished the wasteful hosts, who missed numerous guilt-edged chances throughout the 90 minutes.

However, King popped up once again in the 90th minute to grab his team alate winnerand handEddie Howe's men a crucial three points that will help ease their relegation fears.

Having made a bright start to the match, Bournemouth were handed an early chance to take the lead when they wererewarded a penalty when Sofiane Feghouli hauled down Charlie Daniels inside the penalty area.

Despite scoring two spot-kicks in his last two matches, King sent the subsequent penalty wide of the right hand post, having sent Darren Randolph the wrong way.

To compound the home side's misery, the Hammers went up the other end and less than a minute later went ahead through the recalled Antonio.

With his back to goal inside the Cherries' penalty area, the winger was able to turn and fire a shot across Artur Boruc and into the bottom corner to hand the visitors the breakthrough.

48 - There were just 48 seconds between Bournemouth's missed penalty and West Ham's opening goal. Breakaway.

To their credit, the early setback didn't deter the lively hosts as Daniels' driven cross was inches away from the onrushing King, whilst bothRyan Fraser and Steve Cooks forced Randolph into action.

With the pressure increasing on the visitors, Bournemouth found the equaliser their endeavour deserved when King's exquisite flick over his own shoulder gave him enough space to fire the ball into the bottom corner and atone for his earlier penalty miss.

Although the Cherries had restored parity, they once again squandered a glorious chance to take the lead when they were handed their second penalty of the match when Jose Fonte was deemed to have tripped Marc Pugh in the area.

Afobe was this time tasked with taking the spot-kick, but his effort was arguably worse than Kings, as Randolph saved the striker's tame shot.

The hosts were once again nearly made to pay for their profligacy as Feghouli burst through on goal and was only denied by the outstretched legs of Boruc, as a breathless first half finally came to an end moments later with the scores somehow level.

The second half took little time to burst into life as Bournemouth finally took advantage of their dominance when King scored his second goal of the game just three minutes after the restart.

A free kick from deep was nodded into the Norwegian's path, who, having been offside at the first phase of play, was onside from the knockdown and was able to fire home from close range.

Whilst the game remained wide open, both teams struggled to create many clear cut openings as the pace of the match finally began to ease.

10 - Joshua King has become the first Bournemouth player to hit double figures in a top-flight league campaign. Crowned.

Bilic made a number of attacking substitutions as his side went in search of an equaliser, but though they started to see more possession, the Cherries remained threatening on the counter attack, with Afobe guilty of missing numerous chances.

The striker's wastefulness looked to have proved costly as the Hammers drew level in the final 10 minutes thanks to two substitutes. Having been played in behind the Bournemouth defence, Sam Byram surged forward and with Boruc narrowing his angle, hecut the ballback to giveAndre Ayew a simple tap-in.

Both teams poured forward in search of a winner and with Howe now turning to his bench for an answer, substitute Jack Wilshere played a key role in helping the home side nick a dramatic late winner.

The midfielder's run and eventual shot on goal was superbly saved on the line by Randolph, however, the Hammers' keeperwas helpless to deny King from the rebound, as the winger sealed his hat-trick by firing high into the net and claim a vital three points for Bournemouth, who saw out the remaining minutes to earn their first win since New Year's Eve.
