Bruce eager to ice Villa's transfer cake

Published on: 23 August 2018

Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce believes landing Everton winger Yannick Bolasie on loan would be a nice way to wrap up their transfer business.

The Villans have continued to bolster their ranks via the loan market as they seek to mount another challenge for promotion this season, adding Lille winger Anwar El Ghazi to the squad on a season-long loan on Wednesday.

Bruce is now looking to complete the signing of Bolasie, who was in the stands at Villa Park on Wednesday night to watch the 2-2 draw with Brentford.

The DR Congo international was thought to be a target for Middlesbrough but Villa have outmuscled their Championship rivals to get ahead in the race for the Everton wideman.

Bolasie, who has been told he does not feature in Toffees boss Marco Silva's plans, is expected to complete his season-long loan move on Thursday, much to the delight of Bruce.

Speaking after Wednesday's game, Bruce said: "If we can put the icing on the cake with Bolasie tomorrow then it's exactly what we're looking for.

"He was here [at Villa Park watching the game] and we hope we can tie it up.

"The one thing we haven't got - with the injuries we have - is anything up the top end of the pitch if we need to change things. He'll give us that."

Villa find themselves in fifth after four matches, two points behind early pace-setters Leeds following an unbeaten start to the campaign.

Bruce's side are 3/1 to be promoted this season, while they are 9/1 to win the Championship outright.

Should Bolasie's loan deal be completed in time then he could make his debut against Reading on Saturday.

The Villans are 8/13 to come out on top, while the winless Royals are 9/2 and the draw 11/4.
