Former Ghana international Opoku Nti is not convinced the Black Stars can be built around homegrown players.

His comment comes after erstwhile president and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama claimed he will join forces with the Ghana FA to build the Black Stars around homegrown players.

But Opoku Nti in an interview with Kessben FM monitored by Footballghana.com casted doubts about it.

“It is not possible to build the national team around local players. Until the economy changes to be buoyant and companies sponsoring the Ghana Premier League, it will be very difficult to get the core Black Stars team from the local scene”

“During our playing days, Kotoko were able to produced 12 players, with eight starters for the national team. It has happened before but we should ask ourselves why players stayed in the local scene at the time. It was because the economy was good, where supporters had enough funds to even gift players”

“The factors are enormous but we have to lay certain foundation first and is the foundation is how we can make the economy better”
