Burnley's friendly with Hannover was abandoned at halftime over crowd trouble.
Fans of the German side charged towards Burnley fans in the Cricket Field End with just over five minutes of the half to go and then threw chairs into the home section of that stand, reports the Lancashire Evening Telegraph.
The first half continued, with Ben Mee scoring, and during the interval police looked to have restored order as stewards moved the Burnley fans out of the Cricket Field End.
But the players were late emerging for the second half and it soon became clear that the game was under threat.
Burnley's official Twitter account confirmed the game had been abandoned on police advice, before a tannoy announcement confirmed the game had been off due to an 'extreme risk' to the safety of supporters.
Clarets boss Sean Dyche said: "They called us in and said 'look, we're going to call it for the safety of all involved, stewards, fans, police etc'.
“That was pretty early, the police were in the referee's room, called me, went through the procedure, and obviously we fully support the police's decision.
“Hopefully nobody has got hurt."
