Burnley pair Tarkowski and Pope insist they\'re in rightful table position

Burnley defender James Tarkowski says they feel they're in a rightful position on the table this season.

The Clarets sit seventh after a 1-0 win over Newcastle United.

Tarkowski told the Lancashire Evening Telegraph: "I've not been here for the full five years but since I've been in there's probably been 10 or 11 1-0 wins.

“Last year there were a lot of 1-0 wins. It's the way we like to do it. We're not the most expansive side but we can get the goal and we can defend.

“You always feel like you've got a chance but the opposition is also thinking that at 0-0. We know what it's about and we know that if we stick in there we'll get that chance.

“We knew that they'd conceded goals in the second half as well, that was something that the gaffer told us, so that showed."

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Nick Pope has hailed their defensive team work this season.

“The defence has been excellent for me since I came into the team, I can't say enough about how good they've been," he said.

“It was nice to make some saves as a goalkeeper and a clean sheet, it's what we work for, so I'm happy with that as well.

“We defend the goal with our bodies on the line, what more can I ask for? It's not just about the back four, Barnesy ran some miles side to side, pressing. It's the whole team set up."

Pope admits they're now seeing opposition teams setting up defensively at Turf Moor.

“We've been here a year now and I think we learned a lot last year.

“Maybe it's something that teams wouldn't have done last year, being a newly promoted team. But that's a new challenge for us, that's something we have to deal with and grow and learn from."
