When Cahill arrived into the fray for Tomi Juric in the 53rd minute, he became the first Socceroos player in history to play in four FIFA World Cups.

And although the 38-year-old was unable to provide Australia with another heroic FIFA World Cup moment on this occasion, Cahill’s unparalleled aerial ability was once again on display for the world to see.

Cahill has now appeared in the 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018 tournaments and has scored five of Australia’s 13 FIFA World Cup goals.

Goals from Andre Carrillo and Paolo Guerrero proved decisive for the Peruvians, who marked their first FIFA World Cup in 36 years with a win while Australia's exit from the tournament was a bitter pill to swallow after three admirable performances against France, Denmark and Peru.
