Ghana’s men’s football team has performed strongly at several Olympics, becoming the first African national team to win a medal when they collected bronze in 2024. Our attention this year and next year is turning to the women’s team, so do they have a chance of earning a model at the 2024 Olympics in Paris?

What Are Their Chances?

The Black Queens have never qualified for the Olympics, which included women’s football for the first time in 1996, with the USA grabbing the gold medal.  The American team has proved to be the strongest in this tournament, winning four goal medals in total and with several other high-placed finishes.

With only two teams qualifying from Africa, getting to the Olympics in Paris is extremely difficult. The top-rated teams from the continent according to the latest FIFA rankings are Nigeria (42), South Africa (54), and Cameroon (56), who are all just ahead of Ghana in 59th place.

However, with just 12 teams taking part in the finals in Paris, each of the teams who qualify will feel confident that they can get a medal. The Ghanaian coach, Nora Hauptle, has led the team to three straight victories this year, beating Benin 3-0 and then Senegal by 3-0 and 1-0.

It’s clearly going to be a tough task to get to Paris, but this Ghana team has a chance of qualifying and picking up a medal for the first time. With sports betting becoming a more popular global pastime, fans of the team may be looking out for the available odds for the Black Queens qualifying and then picking up a medal in France.

What Do They Need to Do to Get There?

The Black Queens recently found out that their first qualifying game for this tournament is against Guinea. With the Ghana team ranked 59th in the world and Guinea 136th, this looks like a relatively good draw. The first game is to be played in Guinea on July 10, with the return leg in Ghana on July 18.

The winner’s next task will be to beat the team that wins the match between Benin and Guinea-Bissau in the second round, where the seven best teams from the most recent Women’s African Cup of Nations join the first-round winners.  Two more rounds follow after this, and we’ll know the names of the two African teams to qualify for the Olympics by early April next year.

There are still 25 African teams competing for those two spots at the Paris meeting, so these four rounds of qualifying are sure to be tense and exciting. The Ghana team has a real chance of making history by qualifying for their first Olympics, but there’s still a long way to go before we’ll know whether this is going to happen.
