CAS rejects Tema Youth’s plea for injunction on División One League following relegation

Published on: 22 September 2023

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has dismissed Tema Youth FC’s attempt to prevent relegation from the Division One League while their substantive case against the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is pending.

This decision follows CAS’s prior refusal on July 26, 2022, to grant Tema Youth FC a stay of execution concerning the GFA Appeals Committee’s ruling on payments linked to Joseph Paintsil’s transfer.

As a result, Tema Youth FC has dealt with a recurring 3-point deduction after each match, in adherence to the Disciplinary Code, owing to their non-compliance with the Appeals Committee’s directive.

The GFA Appeals Committee’s verdict on June 11, 2022 (the “Appealed Decision”) mandated Tema Youth FC to remit the following payments within 14 working days from that date:

• EUR 688,000 to Young Red Bull • EUR 150,000 to the GFA • EUR 150,000 to the Ghana League Clubs Association (“GHALCA”)

With the injunction request denied, Tema Youth FC’s relegation from the Division One League remains in effect until their case against the GFA reaches its final resolution.
