Catalan Reports Suggest Lionel Messi Has Beaten Ballon d'Or Favourite Cristiano Ronaldo to the Title

After a stellar first half of the calendar year for Portugal and Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, the second half is turning out to be quite the stinker.

After helping to guide Real Madrid to their eleventh European crown in May, the 31-year-old repeated the trick with his country at Euro 2016, scoring three goals on his way to captaining Portugal to their first ever major international trophy.

But he endured a tough start to the season scoring just seven goals in ten appearances for Real since his return from injury.

And now according to Catalan pressDiario Gol, Ronaldo has received the worst news possible: Lionel Messi will win the Ballon d'Or.

The report, which should be taken with a pinch of salt, claim the newly disbanded France Football award will be awardedto the Barcelona superstar, while the new FIFA award 'The Best' will be handed to Ronaldo.

The Ballon d'Or split with FIFA recently, which means the award will go back to its old format of having just esteemed sports journalists vote for the winner.

Many assumed that Ronaldo's team achievements, coupled with his customary abundance of goals, meant that the 2016 Ballon d'Or contest was already done and dusted... well not quite it seems...Messi strikes again!
