Diego Simeone's Rojiblancos saw off Bayer Leverkusen with a 0-0 draw to advance to the final eight with a 4-2 aggregate.

Leverkusen required three goals at the Vicente Calderon to eliminate Atleti but were unable to break down Simeone's side.

It was the visiting goalkeeper, Bernd Leno, who had more work to do in the first half and was at his best to deny dangerous efforts from Angel Corre and Koke.

Early in the second half, a deft Antoine Griezmann chip wasn't too far off before it was Bayer's turn to test the opposing gloveman Jan Oblak.

Somehow the Slovenian came up with a tremendous triple save to deny Julian Brandt's initial attempt, then twice thwarting Kevin Volland's follow-ups, before Chicharito fired wide on the fourth effort for Leverkusen.

Karim Bellarabi then forced another save from Oblak with Chicharito unable to slot home the rebound

There were a few half-chances for both sides in the ensuing 15 or so minutes but nothing of consequence as Atletico held out to book their spot in the final eight alongside fellow Spaniards Barcelona and Real Madrid, Leverkusen's German rivals Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, Italian giants Juventus, France's impressive AS Monaco and England's surprise packet Leicester City.

The draw for the Champions League quarter-finals takes place at midday on Friday.
