Chelsea and Manchester City Hit With Heavy Fines After 'Battle of Etihad' But Escape Points Penalty

Published on: 12 December 2016

Chelsea and Manchester City have both been fined by the FA, having admitted to charges of failing to control their players.

The pertinent incident took place during the Blues' 3-1 win over City weekend before last, after Sergio Aguero made a lunging tackle on David Luiz. A touchline brawl ensued, with City ultimately getting both Aguero and Fernandinho suspended.

Reports claimed that Chelsea could have faced a possible deduction in points after an accumulation of charges in the last two years, but have escaped with a fine of £100,000. City, meanwhile, will pay substantially less - £35,000 -but the Blues would much rather a hefty fine than lose their lead atop the Premier League table.

A statement on the FA's official website reads: "Following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing, Manchester City and Chelsea have been fined £35,000 and £100,000 respectively after both admitted a breach of FA Rule E20(a).

"The two clubs were charged for failing to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from provocative behaviour."
