Following the dismissal of fellow Italian Antonio Conte on Friday, Chelsea moved to instate the former Napoli tactician and confirmed the appointment with an announcement on their official website.

“It is an exciting new period in my career,” the 59-year-old declared to Chelsea.com. “I hope we can provide some entertaining football for our fans and that we will be competing for trophies at the end of the season, which is what the club deserves.”

Sarri is followed from Napoli to Stamford Bridge by Italy international Jorginho, who has signed a five-year contract after Chelsea pipped Manchester City to seal a €60 million transfer.

The 26-year-old becomes the Blues’ first major signing of the summer and spoke of his delight at making the move to English football.

“I am absolutely ecstatic to be here at Chelsea,” Jorginho told Chelsea’s website. “It is not easy to join such a big team so I am very happy.

“I am excited to play in such an intense league for a team that gives everything to play and win.”

Jorginho played an integral role in Sarri’s Napoli side that finished second in Serie A last, with a record points haul of 90. The Brazil-born midfielder scored 4 goals in 39 appearances.
