Chelsea boss Conte hails Drinkwater for victory over Newcastle

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte hailed Danny Drinkwater's performance for victory over Newcastle United.

Eden Hazard scored twice as Chelsea came from behind to beat Newcastle 3-1 in the Premier League.

Dwight Gayle had benefited from a couple of fortunate ricochets to fire Newcastle into an early lead at Stamford Bridge but after Andreas Christensen headed against a post, Hazard soon pulled the hosts level.

Alvaro Morata headed home a fine cross from Victor Moses to reach nine league goals for the season and put them in front before the interval before Hazard sealed victory with a delicate, chipped penalty after Moses had been brought down in the box by Matt Ritchie.

While delighted with Hazard, Conte was also pleased with Drinkwater on the day.

Conte said: "Today he started the game like the team, a bit slow, but then improved a lot. It's great for me and the team to have another option, especially when we play with three midfielders. To have another option is vitally important."

On Hazard he stated: "He played a really good game. I think he enjoyed playing this type of football. Eden for us is an important player because with him we can change our system, he can play as a second striker or a number 10 when we play 3-4-3.

"Eden and Alvaro showed a great link today, I saw a lot of good combination play. I'm happy but in this league there is a team doing extraordinary things, Man City. At the same time it's important to look at ourselves and go step by step.

"The most important thing for me is to score the penalty. You can decide what you want with the way you prefer to kick but the most important thing is to score and that happened so I'm happy. Next time he must pay great attention because goalkeepers study players who take penalties, but he can repeat it."
