Chelsea Football Club Banned from Signing New Players Until July 2020

Published on: 22 February 2019

English Premier League giants Chelsea Football Club have found themselves the wrong side of the law after breaching some Fifa regulations in relation to the signing of young players.

That has led to the World Football governing body, Fifa, slapping a ban on the club for the next two transfer windows.

The ban means Chelsea can sell players for the upcoming summer (July-August 2019) and winter (January 2020) transfer windows but cannot sign any new players.

Fifa announced the ban in a statement which read, in part: “This ban applies to the club as a whole – with the exception of the women’s and futsal teams – and does not prevent the release of players,”

Chelsea has reportedly breached Fifa’s regulations in relation to the signing of young players (under 18), particularly article 19 and 18b, which relates to the influence of third parties on signings.

Chelsea can appeal the decision at the Fifa Appeals Committee, which could delay the ban during its deliberations, allowing them to sign players in the meantime. The ban would then come into effect if the initial decision is upheld.

Aside the two window ban, Chelsea has also been fined over £460,000 by the world governing body.
