Chelsea in Danger of Massive Points Deduction Following Ugly Manchester City Scenes

Published on: 10 December 2016

Chelsea could receive a hefty points ban following their huge bust-up at Manchester City last weekend.

City's Sergio Aguero and Fernandinho were sent off during the fracas, but both sets of players were involved in ugly scenes as the game ended in a volatilefashion. Both sides were charged with failing to control their players but Chelsea's poor recent record means they could face a possible points deduction, according tothe Mirror.

The report claims Chelsea are now in very real danger of suffering a points deduction, the first time in 26 years that such a punishment for a top flight team will have occurred. Their match against Tottenham Hotspur last season, affectionately nicknamed the 'Battle of the Bridge', saw the Premier League leaders charged £375,000, later reduced to £290,000 on appeal.

The independent commission warned Chelsea at the time of the fine that their previous record meant a points deduction had been considered, and that the club could potentially be docked points in the future should their poor behaviour continue.

The Board is satisfied the greater fine on Chelsea fairly reflects its role in the incident and its lamentable recent record for failing properly to control its players. The time cannot be too far distant when a Commission concludes the only proper sanction is a points deduction.

The City match was the fifth time in 19 months that the southwest London club have been charged by disciplinary chiefs for breaching the FA's Rule E20 concerning the behaviour of players. The club were found guilty and issued with fines on the four previous occasions.
