Chelsea Preparing £200k-a-Week Deal to Keep Star Man at the Bridge for the Rest of His Career

Chelsea look set to try to capitalise on the positive atmosphere around the club by tying down some of their star men to long-term contract extensions - with reports that the Blues are getting ready to offer Diego Costa a massive new deal.

TheMirrorreport that this season's leading Premier League scorer could be handed a two-year extension to his current deal, bumping his wages from around £150,000-a-week up to something closer to £200,000-a-week and keeping him at the club until 2021.

The plan is said to be to keep the 28-year-old at Stamford Bridge until the end of his playing career, after the Londoners feared losing him in the summer amidst rumours that Atletico Madrid were planning a grand 'homecoming' bid after Jose Mourinho and Guus Hiddink failed to provide Costa with anything approaching success in 2015/16.

Costa's goals have shot Antonio Conte's men to the top of the Premier League table in time for Christmas, with Liverpool's late win in Monday night's Merseyside derby meaning that Chelsea will take a six-point lead into the Boxing Day games.

Previous concerns about the Spain international's temperament have been calmed this season under Conte, after he went almost three months between yellow cards until last weekend's win over Crystal Palace.

The former Atletico man even ended up playing peacemaker in a flashpoint between Chelsea and Manchester City players at the start of the month, leading Conte to note: "Diego is showing he is using his passion in the right way and I'm very happy about that."
