Ghana winger Christian Atsu’s position at Newcastle United is danger as youngster Jacob Murphy vows to provide the Ghana stiff competition.

Jacob Murphy was handed an opportunity to impress on Sunday when he made his first Premier League start for Newcastle United.

The 22-year-old was one of two changes to the team that defeated West Ham United 3-0 prior to the international break.

Jesus Gomez was also called upon, while Christian Atsu and Chancel Mbemba were left out of the first XI against Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium.

Murphy played 59 minutes of action before being hauled off by assistant manager Paco Moreno, who took charge of the team on the day due to Rafael Benitez recovering from a hernia operation.

Christian Atsu had to come off the bench watching Jacob Murphy try to impress Rafael Benitez who was watching from home.

The winger may not have been able to impress the top boss directly, but he will hope to earn more opportunities as the season progresses.

Meanwhile, Atsu’s introduction helped Newcastle ended the afternoon as 1-0 winners thanks to a goal from club captain Jamaal Lascelles, who netted in the 76th minute.

However, Jacob Murphy remains upbeat of challenging the Ghana, he to to twitter to post,”Lads worked their socks off. Happy for my first prem start, more to come from me 👊🏽 #NUFC.”
