Claudio Ranieri Delighted to End 'Unbelievable 2016' With Victory Over West Ham

Published on: 31 December 2016

Claudio Ranieri emphasised the importance of taking all three points to end the year in which they shocked the world, as they squeezed past West Ham 1-0 with Islam Slimani's header.

Leicester's previous 'invincible' aura around the King Power had been shattered by losses to West Brom and Everton, but they managed to seal a win this time in a frenetic encounter.

"It is very important to get three points to close our fantastic year - it was unbelievable for us." Ranieri toldBBC Sport. "Of course, it is very important for our [position in the] table, twenty points." Forty is considered the magic number to survive relegation, and we are halfway through.

"Our first thirty minutes were fantastic. In the second half we closed all the space very well and tried to score a goal."

"It's important now to improve our confidence and be solid and strong."

Leicester lose a couple of players to the African Cup of Nations in January - most notably, Riyad Mahrez. The Algerian returned to the starting line-up against the Hammers and marshalled their early domination.

"The fans watch and see that I have a very good team, and the players who should play will play well."

Ranieri will not be going out and getting hammered for the New Year, though.

"The plan is the same, of course! After the victory you can relax just for an hour because tomorrow morning, you start to think about Middlesbrough."
