COMMUNITY SHIELD: Pedro sent off and Morata fluffs pen as Chelsea lose to Arsenal

Pedro saw red and Alvaro Morata missed in the penalty shootout as champions Chelsea lost a lively Community Shield to Arsenal on Sunday.

Adding to the drama was the Gunners' equaliser in the normal time - scored by Sead Kolasinac on his competitive debut.

Arsenal had dominated the first-half, with fellow debutant Alexandre Lacazette impressive in attack. Indeed, the Frenchman came closest to scoring before the break, hitting the post midway through the opening 45 minutes.

Chelsea struggled to test Gunners goalkeeper Petr Cech, as Arsenal's midfield controlled the momentum of the game. Mohamed Elneny, particularly, was outstanding in a defensive role.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was forced to give Kolasinac his debut before halftime due to a head injury suffered by Per Mertesacker.

The match sprung to life immediately after halftime as Victor Moses fired home from a poorly defended corner. Gary Cahill's header setup the Nigerian to put Chelsea ahead on 47 minutes.

Granit Xhaka almost drew level 25 minutes later, with a long range drive tipped aside by Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. Pedro was sent off ten minutes later, a poor challenge on Elneny drawing a straight red card from ref Bobby Maddley.

From the free-kick conceded, Xhaka's delivery set up Kolasinac to head home the equaliser.

With the scores level at fulltime, the match went to penalties with the ABBA system employed for the first time in English football.

Courtois and Morata both missed their spotkicks, handing Arsenal the Community Shield 4-1 on penalties, with Olivier Giroud firing home the winner.

Alexis Sanchez, who sat out the game, joined the celebrations on the pitch, shaking hands with all of his team-mates before waving to Arsenal fans.
