Community Shield Preview: Can Chelsea enact revenge on Arsenal after FA Cup loss?

Published on: 05 August 2017

There will be a number of swashbuckling signings on show between the two London rivals when the Community shield kick's off on Sunday.

Arsenal, looking to return to the Champions League, will be hoping to strike an early blow in the fight against the Blues in their battle for both a top-four finish and a potential title-challenge.

An early win for Arsene Wenger, who endured difficult periods during his time as manager last season, might be the stepping stone for a successful domestic campaign.

Antoine Conte and Chelsea meanwhile, will be seeking to defend the Premier League title and have a greater impact in their return to Europe, and a trophy here could set them on their way to more glory at home and abroad.

The most expensive Arsenal signing will be looking to prove he's worth after a club-record deal.

Alexandre Lacazette, a striker who has been brought from Lyon for £52 million, could potentially set a marker for the upcoming campaign and he will be keen to show his talent at Wembley with a goal.

His is a proven goalscorer in France and netted as career best of 28 league goals in 2016/17 as his side finished fourth. It will also be interesting to see how he plays with Alexis Sanchez, if the Chilean stays, and added firepower may relieve the responsibility on the winger on Sunday.

It is expected he will lead the front line ahead of Giroud, and Wenger may well bring on his fellow compatriot in the second half to boost the attack if they are behind in the match or in search for a winner.

Another player hoping to impress for the Gunners is left-back Sead Kolasinac, a free-transfer from German side FC Schalke.

The 24 year-old may well start ahead of Nacho Monreal in that position and at a young age, a solid performance here could help him on his way to securing the left-back role as well as to a potentially long and successful career at the Emirates.

Chelsea have made more signings and have spent considerably more than their rivals ahead of the Community Shield. A notable addition is £70m attacker Alvaro Morata, who has signed from Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Although a vast amount, he could be the man to set Wembley alight for the Blues against Arsenal and will be important to their success in the fixture.

He knows Antoine Conte well, as the boss signed him at Juventus before resigning to take charge at Italy. His ability in the air as well as his awareness and cool eye for goal will be important not just in the context of this match but throughout the course of the season.

With the inevitable departure of Diego Costa, it is up to Morata to score the goals for the team, and netting here would help him justify his price tag and make him an early fans favourite with the supporters.

Having sold Nemanja Matic for £40m to Manchester United, another new addition and a player who will have to fill a player's shoes is Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco.

At 22 years-old it will be fascinating to see how he adapts to his new environment in England and in particular, how he copes with the fast tempo of British football.

He is a midfielder similar to Matic, but has more acceleration and can take players on.
Having watched snippets of him, a young Patrick Viera comes to mind and we will be seeing his potential if he features.

Antonio Rudiger will bring added competition to the centre-back role where the team's defensive stability helped bring them the title in April.

He can also play at right-back and could replace Branislav Ivanovic long-term. Rudiger will be hoping to start after his £34m move from Roma last month.

A win for either side will be important for momentum ahead of the start of the Premier League season, and both teams will be hoping to show what they can do.

Meanwhile the respective managers will be hoping their big-money signings perform and give the team added impetus.
