Craig Burley Suggests Liverpool Need Goalkeeper of Hugo Lloris's Calibre to Progress

Liverpool's goalkeeping situation has been dominating their headlines for the past number of weeks, with Loris Karius struggling to fulfil the role Jurgen Klopp had laid out for him after his move to Anfield in the summer.

Karius arrived with much expectation after strong performances at Mainz, but was exploited by the likes of Bournemouth and West Ham's Dimitri Payet.

While Leicester's Kasper Schmeichel was suggested as a possible new Liverpool no.1, Craig Burley remains unconvinced that he is the 'great' goalkeeper that the Reds need moving forward.

"They've got two goalkeepers; Karius, is 23, he's struggled a bit and been dropped, and Mignolet who's more experienced, makes some great saves but has got an error in him," Burley explained toESPN.

"I put Kasper Schmeichel in that category where he's a good goalkeeper, but not a great goalkeeper. I think they have to be aiming higher if they're going to make a change.

"If they were going to go for somebody, they'd have to be looking at the calibre of Hugo Lloris, and people like that," he concluded.

Lloris's contract situationis far from reaching any kind of resolution, but the likelihood of the 29-year-old making something of a sideways move to Liverpool seems unlikely.

Perhaps what Burley is alluding tois that the Reds need to keep Karius as a second choice stopper but bring in any top class goalkeeper to replace Mignolet. Most would invariably agree.
