Crystal Palace defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah was a bright spot in Holland's 4-0 thrashing by France in last night's World Cup qualifier.

Manchester United youngster Fosu-Mensah, who joined Crystal Palace on a season-long loan last month, played 90 minutes for the Oranje and produced three goal-saving tackles during the shellacking. The 19-year-old made more tackles than any other player.

"It's a special day, but unfortunately not with the desired result," Fosu-Mensah said. "I think the French were just a cut above us. I can not say I'm shocked, but it's just a shame that it ran out.

"I am very grateful to the coach for the confidence he has shown in me. I heard on the matchday that I would play. I was very happy and will always be grateful to Dick Advocaat for this opportunity."
