Current Black Stars team can win AFCON, World Cup – Ex-Ghana defender John Paintsil

Former Ghana international, John Paintsil has backed the Black Stars to win the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in the future.

The national team of the West African country has failed to win the AFCON for the past 40 years despite making the final multiple times.

Just last January, the Black Stars participated at the 2021 AFCON but failed woefully after the team crashed out at the group stage.

A few months later, the national team led by German-trained tactician Otto Addo has qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup at the expanse of a star-studded Nigeria side.

Speaking to SuperSport in an interview, John Paintsil has expressed optimism about the chances of the current Black Stars team ending the long wait.

He said he sees potential in the squad and sees the side winning not just the AFCON but the world cup in the future.

"Ghana can win the World Cup. If this team is kept for long, they can win the African Cup of Nations and the World Cup,” Paintsil said.

Ghana will know its group stage opponents at the 2022 FIFA World Cup on Friday, April 1, 2022.
