Daily Fantasy Gameweek 27 Review: High Hopes Fall Flat as Relegation Battlers Prove Valuable

Published on: 08 March 2017

Premier League Gameweek 27 was one of a number of high-profile flops inYahoo Daily Fantasy, with six of the 10 most popular players failing to score more than 5.7 points apiece.

Alexis Sanchez and Zlatan Ibrahimovic were the two leading players who failed to rake in the expected points for their respective teams - Ibrahimovic failing to reward the 39% of managers who paid top dollar for him with a goalless, 2.5 point performance against Bournemouth.

Long-term though, Sanchez may be the man who Fantasy owners have more concerns about. His 5.7 points against Liverpool came from the bench - with Arsene Wenger taking the shock decision to drop him in one of the club's biggest games of the season. Behind-the-scenes unrest coupled with a poor follow-up performance in the Champions League against Bayern make Sanchez difficult to trust at his high price level for the next few weeks.

Rising Stock

Just outside the top 10 though, some popular picks flourished. Of the 11th-20th most popular players in Gameweek 27, only three failed to beat the 5.7 point threshold set by their more fashionable counterparts - with Leroy Sane, Harry Kane, Dele Alli and even Willy Caballero hitting double figures.

Caballero's performance is an interesting one for managers looking for a bargain stopper - the City man was in the bottom half price-wise for starting keepers last week, but has now conceded just one goal in seven games against Premier League teams since the turn of the year. That's top form, and something to keep an eye on; although City to face some tough fixtures in the not-too distant future.

One-Hit Wonders or Waking Giants?

The surprise hitters of the week - the cheaper players who were picked up by just a tiny fraction ofYahoo Daily Fantasymanagers - come mostly from the Premier League's relegation-threatened teams.

Fernando Llorente was kicking somewhere around the 40th most expensive forward range but ended as the week's fourth highest scorer, rewarding the less than 10% of managers who backed him against Burnley, and he's worth a glanceagainst Hull this coming weekend.

Speaking of that Swansea vs Burnley game; Andre Gray may have cost $2 more than the Swans man, but he offset that with a 0.3 point gain over his relegation rival, and with his sheer rarity - less than 1% of managers picked up the controversial forward, giving them a massive lever up over those who slept on his potential. If Burnley are starting to fire away from home, Gray could be one to watch in the final months of the season.

Marcos Rojo came in as the week's second highest scoring defender, but he's a much less intriguing option in future weeks - the goal which lifted him up the rankings last weekend was just his second in 85 United games. Don't bank on that repeating.

Other notable performances

As good a goalkeeper as Ben Foster is, clean sheets are vital and Foster'sjust being beaten too regularly to be a good fantasy investment - despite regularly being one of the most popular picks between the sticks. -2.5 points this week, andWest Brom have kept just two clean sheets in their last 15 Premier League games. When Caballero (6 in 7 against PL opposition) is available for the same price...well. You do the maths.

We've touched on him already, but Harry Kane might now be the most reliable of the big-money players. Of the three strikers to demand the top-mark $28 in Gameweek 27, Kane picked up 11.7 points more than the other two combined. The man does not. Stop. Scoring. If you want a consistent bedrock who you can throw some wildcards in around, Kane is the prime man for the rest of the season.
