Dan Kweku Yeboah criticizes Mariano Barreto's appointment

Ace sports broadcaster, Dan Kweku Yeboah has criticized the appointment of Mariano Barreto, the head coach of Asante Kotoko, describing it as ‘senseless’.

The Portuguese manager was named as the head coach for Ghana Premier League prior to the start of the second round of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League, replacing John Smith and Abdul Gazale, who had been in charge of the club on an interim basis following the sacking of Maxwell Konadu in December 2020.

The former Black Stars gaffer started his career on a good note but shockingly lost to Medeama SC in the matchday 21 games at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium over the weekend despite taking an early lead through Emmanuel Gyamfi.

Before the end of the first half, Prince Opoku-Agyemang and Richard Boadu scored two quick goals to seal all three points for the Yellow and Mauve.

Accessing the game on Adepa TV on StarTimes, the ace journalist criticised the appointment of the 60-year-old and indicated he is yet to understand why the Nana Yaw Amponsah led management took the decision to hire Barreto.

“I am shocked with this Asante Kotoko management. Clubs in this country and investing in players and coaches and this management decide to appoint a coach who cannot read our game properly.

“Yaw Preko proved that he is a good coach and you cannot see that in Mariano Barreto and I don’t understand his appointment.

“His tactics are stagnant and when you stop him, he cannot prove anything tactically again on the field of play and for me, his appointment is senseless.

“Medeama clearly dominated the second half and Kotoko nowhere on the pitch. It is about we believe in our own and give the chance and not hiring a foreign gaffer and paying him in dollars but will not offer anything to the team,” he added.

The defeat leave Asante Kotoko at the 2nd position with 35 points.

Barreto meanwhile is on a one and half year contract at the club.

Asante Kotoko will be hosted by Legon Cities in the matchday 22 games at the Accra Sports Stadium.
