Dortmund Announce Signing of Bayer Leverkusen Centre-Back Omer Toprak for Next Season

Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Omer Toprak will join Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund next season.


Thomas Tuchel's side confirmed the transfer earlier on Sunday on their website, with Dortmund confirming the club will meet the defender's release clause and that Toprak will join the club for the 2017-18 season.


"Eight-time German champions Borussia Dortmund have announced that central defender Ömer Toprak (27) will join the club in the summer from Bundesliga side Bayer 04 Leverkusen," Dortmund confirmed on theirwebsite.

"Dortmund are prepared to meet the release clause in the player's contract and he will join the squad for the 2017/18 season."


Toprak has made 14 Bundesliga appearances this season, scoring once and helping his side into ninth position in the Bundesliga this season. Dortmund also confirmed they would not comment on the transfer until the end of the season out of respect for their league rivals.


Ömer Toprak is a strong defender with international experience and great leadership qualities,� Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said regarding the signing.

Toprak joined Leverkusen in 2011 after a three-year spell at Freiburg and has made over 150 Bundesliga appearances during his time in Germany.


He was linked with a move to Arsenal last summer before the Gunners opted for Shkodran Mustafi, and helped Leverkusen knock Tottenham out of the Champions League earlier this season.


Toprak will join the likes of Marc Bartra, Sven Bender andSokratis Papastathopoulos as centre-back options for Thomas Tuchel, whose side are currently third in the Bundesliga.
