In a game that meant so much to both sets of fans, Borussia Dortmund fans took the law into their own hands.

There were a total of 28 charges handed to Dortmund fans for their violence before the match towards RB Leipzig fans. The attacks were towards any of RB Leipzig fans they could seewhich including, women and children.

In the match Borussia Dortmund came out 1-0 winners and halted RB Leipzig's title push as Bayern extended the gap at the top.

Dortmund police have said that they had to use batons and pepper spray on supporters to try and stop the violence from getting any worse and completely out of hand.

They also said:All in all, extreme aggression and readiness for violence could be established among the Dortmund fans against the visitors. This was directed against any person who could be identified as a Leipzig fan, regardless of whether they were small children, women or families.

In a statement made on theclub website,BVB said:Dortmund strongly condemns this violence, and that they are helping the police out in any way that they can.

The Dortmund players on the pitch did not let the scenes from before the game affect them though and they went on to beat surprise title chasers RB Leipzig 1-0 on Saturdaywith a first half goal from Aubameyang.

These dropped points for the Bundesligasurprisetitle contenders could have provedto bea big moment in the title race.

However, Bayern Munich were not able to fully capitalise on their rivals' dropped points as they drew 1-1 at home to Schalke, subsequently ending their winning streak and only being able to increase their gap at the top to four points.

The match against Schalke would have been the perfect opportunity to really cement themselves as title favourites andit looked like their streak was going to continue when Lewandowski put Bayern ahead in the ninth minute.

Their lead only lasted four minutes however when Naldo slotted home a free-kick. They had the chance to win it late on, but Javi Martinez wasted the chance to ultimatelysend last year's champions six points clear of second placed RB Leipzig.
