Dortmund Set Asking Price That Would Put Star Forward Among World's Top 10 Most Expensive Players

Published on: 09 February 2017

Borussia Dortmund are reported to have set their price for sought after striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at a minimum of €70m, a figure that would propel the Gabonese international to become the most expensive African player of all time.

Aubameyang has spoken about a desire to play for Real Madrid in the past, while rumours regarding interest from Manchester City have resurfaced in recent days. Liverpool, too, have been linked, although almost certainly won't be able to afford him at such a lofty valuation.

According to Goal.com, specifically referring to Real, Dortmund won't accept less than €70m. The Bundesliga side remain under no pressure to sell and will only consider offers for Aubameyang if the financial incentive makes them too good to refuse straight off the bat.

It is also suggested that Dortmund sources maintain the 2015 African Footballer of the Year was misquoted when he recently told French media outlet RMC he would have to move on from Westfalenstadion if he wants to take his career to the next level.

There have indeed been no further instances of Aubameyang publicly talking about his future. But if the valuation Goal.com puts forward is to be believed, it suggests Dortmund may have slightly softened their stance in light of the events of recent weeks.

Speaking in January, chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke had named €80m (£68m) as the minimum price that would be considered.

"Auba was our alternative to 'the world ending' after Lewandowski's departure. With an €80m offer, I would be thinking about Reinhard Rauball (president) and Michael Zorc (sporting director) - if we had one, we would have to get together with Pierre-Emerick," he said.

"We always have to differentiate between situations where there is such an offer, but we have no pressure - I would prefer it if no offer came."

All signs currently point to Aubameyang staying with Dortmund unless a club, most likely Real Madrid or Manchester City, is prepared to put up serious cash to prise him away.
