Dreams FC coach Karim Zito happy with John Antwi’s Black Stars call up

Dreams FC coach Karim Zito has lauded the invitation of striker John Antwi in the Black Stars provisional squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Antwi is one of the eleven home-based players to have made the provisional lists of the Black Stars released by coach Chris Hughton last week.

Hughton has until January 3 to finalise his selection, reducing the squad to the final 27 players for the tournament.

Antwi earned call-ups to the Black Stars in 2017 and 2020 for World Cup and AFCON qualifiers respectively, winning two senior team caps.

The former Al Ahly and Pyramids FC striker has not played for the West African giants since 2020 but making a return after earning a place in the provisional lists for the upcoming AFCON competition.

I’m very happy that he has been recalled to the Black Stars. Making the provisional squad is a plus for him. I’m happy for him, he has shown his qualities after returning to Ghana to play for us” he told West Gold Radio monitored by Footballghana.com.

The striker since returning to Dreams FC has proven he still has some goal scoring in him by helping Dreams reach the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup.

He has played a significant role for the Still Believe lads who are in position to progress to the knockout stage of the Confederations Cup.

Antwi will hope to make the cut for the major tournament to be staged in Ivory Coast next month.

Ghana are placed in Group B of the 2023 AFCON, alongside Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique.

The Black Stars have a history of success in the AFCON, having won the title four times, most recently in 1982. However, they have experienced defeat in three finals since then, including losses to Ivory Coast in 1992 on penalties and Egypt in 2010, as well as a repeat defeat to Ivory Coast in 2015.

The tournament is scheduled to kick off on Saturday, January 13 through to February 11, 2024.
