Spartak Moscow forward Quincy Promes will face prosecution in the Netherlands for his alleged involvement in drugs trafficking, announced Dutch prosecutors on Tuesday.

According to prosecutors, the 31-year-old Dutch international is suspected of being connected to the smuggling of 1,360 kilograms of cocaine into the Netherlands or Belgium in two separate shipments during 2020. In an email statement, the prosecutors detailed the accusations against Promes.

Quoted in Dutch newspaper Het Parool, Promes' lawyer indicated that he would address the case during a pro forma hearing scheduled for Monday.

However, it is expected that Promes will not be present at the hearing, according to the ANP news agency.

Promes, a former player for Ajax Amsterdam and Sevilla, has represented the Netherlands national team on 50 occasions.

Aside from the drug trafficking charges, he also faces assault charges in the Netherlands. The incident relates to a stabbing in July 2020 in the Dutch town of Abcoude, where Promes was arrested.

It later emerged that the alleged victim was Promes' cousin, and the altercation occurred during a fight at a family gathering.
