Eddie Howe Rues Missed Chances in Bournemouth's Defeat to Sunderland at Vitality Stadium

Published on: 05 November 2016

Eddie Howe has stated he doesn't believe that Bournemouth deserved to lose Saturday's encounter with Sunderland.

The Cherries boss was quoted by FourFourTwo after watching his side succumb to their first home league defeat since the opening day of the season after the Black Cats came from behind to snatch a 2-1 victory on the South Coast.

Dan Gosling had fired the Cherries into an early lead but, despite a host of other chances, the home outfit could not find a way past Jordan Pickford.

Sunderland took full advantage by drawing level through Victor Anichebe, before Jermain Defoe wrapped up a massive three points for David Moyes' men with a penalty 20 minutes form time.

The away side also had Steven Pienaar sent off but, despite their one-man advantage, Bournemouth failed to find an equaliser as time ticked on.

Howe said: "We were in total control at 1-0, but we stopped being as progressive as I would have liked and they found a way back into the game.

"We didn't deal with Victor Anichebe particularly well, especially for the goal, but we created some gilt-edged chances and it is frustrating they didn't go in. Their keeper played well, so credit to him.

"We believe in what we do. It is a tough league, so we focus on the next match."

Howe also added that his side had missed the physical and goalscoring attributes of Callum Wilson, as well as midfield anchor man Andrew Surman -both sat out the clash at the Vitality Stadium due to injury.

He said: "Of course you will miss a player of Callum's quality. Andrew as well, he's a key player for us and the control he gives us. They were both misses but that wasn't the reason why we didn't win, we have a good enough squad who still performed for the majority of the game.

"We had good passages of play but ultimately it wasn't quite good enough."
