England will get to World Cup final in Russia, says Dennis Wise

Dennis Wise has tipped England to reach the World Cup final in Russia following a thrilling victory over Colombia in the last 16.

The Three Lions won on penalties in Moscow after Jordan Pickford saved Carlos Bacca's effort and Eric Dier slotted home to set up a quarter-final showdown with Sweden on Saturday.

Early exits from the likes of Germany, Argentina and Spain, coupled with a second-placed finish in Group G, means England will avoid Brazil, France, Uruguay and Belgium in the semi-finals if they progress, instead facing either Croatia or Russia.

Wise believes England can go all the way to the final - which will take place in Moscow on July 15 - for the first time since 1966.

"I think we will get to the final," he told Sky Sports News. "I genuinely believe that."

"It was a great night for the team, a great night for the fans."

"They've got to enjoy it."

"We've got an important game on Saturday against Sweden who I think we can beat."

Wise believes Gareth Southgate should stick with the same side for the quarter-final, but did suggest Danny Rose could come in for Ashley Young at left wing-back.

"You've got to look if any of them have injuries," he added. "Young is 33-years-old in five days. His recovery time might be longer than the others. Rose came on and did extremely well.

"If there's one player who could take a position up its Rose for Young. If everyone else is fit, I'd keep it the same."

England goalkeeper Pickford - who had come in for criticism after the 1-0 defeat to Belgium in the group stage - was praised by Wise, specifically for his match-winning save in the penalty shoot-out.

"He proved me wrong."

"His confidence will be sky high after that performance."

"He's a shot-stopper and reacts very quickly to things," said Wise.

"I saw him do [the style of the match-winning save] against Sweden U21s."

"He went the other way, and saved it with his right hand. Exactly the same save."

"He's very clever, very agile and goes early."

"He's able to spread himself and react to where the ball goes."

"It was such a fantastic save at the crucial time."

Wise was also delighted with Harry Kane for England's opener from the penalty spot and for again finding the back of the net in the shoot-out.

"He is world class, for sure."

"You look at the four penalties he's scored."

"He's changed his way of doing it and hits it with such accuracy and power."

"He's got this inner belief in himself."

"He shows it in his actions and he's been fantastic leader so far."

"He's been absolutely outstanding."

"His hold up play is outstanding and invites fouls and that was important to slow things down late in the game."

"He's very bright."
