"Enjoy your retirement my friend" - Michael Essien reacts to Mesut Ozil retirement

Former Ghanaian international footballer, Michael Essien, has reacted to the news of Mesut Ozil's retirement from football. The retired midfielder, Ozil, announced his decision to hang up his boots via a social media post on Wednesday.

The 34-year-old has had an impressive career at both club and international levels, and spent the past three years in the Turkish Super Lig. He played for the German national team and was part of the squad that won the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Essien, who is now an assistant coach at Danish side FC Nordsjælland, played with Ozil during their successful one-year stint at Real Madrid in the 2012-13 season. The former Chelsea midfielder took to Twitter to express his admiration for the German international, saying: "Enjoy your retirement my friend".

The two players enjoyed a successful stint at Real Madrid, where they formed part of a formidable team that won the La Liga title in the 2011-12 season.
