Young Manchester United talent Kobbie Mainoo is poised to make his starting debut for England in their crucial Euro 2024 round of 16 clash against Slovakia on Sunday evening.

Manager Gareth Southgate has largely stuck with his core lineup despite England's patchy performances against Serbia and Denmark earlier in the tournament. The only alteration so far came in their goalless draw with Slovenia, where Conor Gallagher replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield.

While England struggled to shine in that stalemate, Mainoo caught the eye with a dynamic display in the second half after coming on for Gallagher at halftime. The 19-year-old had previously made a brief appearance in England's narrow victory over Serbia.

Amidst England's quest for cohesion, reports from the Daily Telegraph suggest that Mainoo is set to retain his place in the starting lineup against Slovakia in Gelsenkirchen. Despite missing a training session on Thursday, Declan Rice is expected to partner Mainoo in midfield, with Jude Bellingham playing a slightly advanced role. Mainoo's inclusion aims to provide the midfield balance and connectivity that Alexander-Arnold and Gallagher struggled to achieve.

Mainoo has demonstrated his composure on big stages in recent months, earning a regular spot at Manchester United from November onwards. His standout moment came with a match-winning goal and Player of the Match performance in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

His impact for England against Slovenia was notable, highlighted by a superb first-time assist to Harry Kane, though the chance went begging due to Cole Palmer's miss.

Starting for England in a major tournament would mark another milestone in Mainoo's rapid rise to prominence.
