Everton Boss Koeman Unimpressed With Toiling Toffees Despite Last Gasp Draw With Swansea

Published on: 19 November 2016

Ronald Koeman has revealed that he laid into his Everton stars at half-time of their eventual 1-1 draw with struggling Swansea City.

The Dutchman's displeasure was clear to see as he spoke to the Toffees' official website in the wake of the last-gasp draw that was salvaged thanks to Seamus Coleman's late intervention.

The full back rose highest in the box to nod Everton level with just one minute of the 90 left to play and, in turn, cancel out Gylfi Sigurdsson's first half penalty.

The way we played the second half is how we need to start the game! Still unbeaten at home #everton #efc pic.twitter.com/SnExhCQTsU

Koeman's face was a picture of thunder throughout the opening 45 minutes as he watched his side fail to show a response to the dismal 5-0 defeat they sustained at Stamford Bridge two weeks ago, and he stated that his players were told that they had been extremely poor in the first half at Goodison Park against the Swans.

He said: I was not calm [at half-time] because we spoke a lot about what happened against Chelsea, we spoke about how we need to start and we spoke about the opponent, who are in a difficult situation.

From the start, we wanted to play aggressively, press and make it difficult so they would not be comfortable on the pitch. But it wasn't like that and I was angry.

I expected a reaction from the start - not from the start of the second half.

Of course, in the second half, we did a lot of good things and played some good football. We won every second ball and had good pressing. Then we made it difficult for them.

"It was a great goal and important to make it 1-1. You don't expect - maybe from a set play but not out of a normal situation on the pitch - that you will have only three defenders and one will score.

We took a lot of risks with our substitutions and even at 1-1 we did everything to win the game. That Seamus scored that goal with so many players in front of him was fantastic.

The Dutchman admitted that his charges were probably still reeling slightly from the thumping they received from Antonio Conte's men on November 5, but added he expected his players to prove their worth - particularly in front of their own fans.

He added: It [starting slowly] is a concern. We know if we play at home and we perform like we did in the second half then we will always have the support of the fans.

There's no pattern of play with this Everton team. I've no idea what style Koeman is trying to instill, but it's a disjointed mess.

We need to make things difficult, press and run - and go for it. I think that is where we need to improve.

Maybe today we were lacking a little bit of confidence after what happened against Chelsea. Maybe there were doubts. But if you have doubts on the pitch then you're not yourself and you can't give your best to the team.
