Everton vs Swansea City Match Preview: Classic Encounter, Key Battles, Team News & More

Published on: 17 November 2016

Everton and Swansea City head into Saturday's clash at Goodison Park with hopes of recovering from dismal defeats before the November international break.

The Toffees were thoroughly thrashed 5-0 by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, while Swansea suffered a 3-1 home loss at the hands of Manchester United.

With two weeks having passed since then, attentions turn to Merseyside where both clubs will harbour ambitions of picking up a much needed three points. Here's everything you need to know ahead of the match:

Classic Encounter

Swansea recorded their first ever league triumph over Everton back in January, but it is the 3-2 thriller at Goodison Park in March 2014 that just edges that game out as this fixture'sclassic encounter.

A first-half penalty from Leighton Baines had fired the hosts in front after Ross Barkley was felled by Chico Flores in the area, but former Swansea forward Wilfried Bony was on hand to haul the Swans level 13 minutes later with a predatory finish from Angel Rangel's cross.

A quick-fire double from Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley within a five-minute second half blitz put then manager Roberto Martinez's men in a commanding lead as the Blues continued to mount a push for a Champions League qualification spot.

Ashley Williams - who joined Everton from Swansea this summer - nodded home a 92nd minute goal to reduce the deficit and set up a frantic finish to proceedings but the home side held out for a decisive victory.

Key Battles

The contest in the middle of the park

Everton have had to chop and change their centre midfield partnership in recent weeks due to Idrissa Gana Gueye's and Gareth Barry's one-match suspensions.

The latter will miss the visit of Swansea after picking up his fifth yellow card in the defeat to Chelsea, while the former is set to return after missing the trip to Stamford Bridge through similar circumstances.

Swansea, meanwhile, have not been able to settle on their own regular midfield partnership, with Ki Sung-Yeung, Leon Britton, Jack Cork and Leroy Fer all featuring under Bob Bradley since the American took charge on October 3.

With both sides desperate for a victory, the clash in the midfield area is set to be hotly contested, and whoever successfully dominates in that area will help their side to dictate the outcome of the game.

Ashley Williams vs Swansea's frontline

Former Swans captain Ashley Williams is due to face his old club for the first time since he completed a summer switch to L4, and will likely come up against either Borja Baston or Fernando Llorenteon the Goodison pitch.

The 32-year-old, alongside his centre-back partner, will be tasked with preventing Swansea's choice of striker from netting a rare goal for the South Wales outfit, and he should be professional enough to keep his mind on the matter in hand.

With such an affinity for his former side, however, Williams could find it a tad more difficult to maintain total concentration for the entire 90 minutes and, if Swansea can take advantage of any lapses in judgement, they could secure only a second ever league victory over the Toffees.

Team News

Everton boss Ronald Koeman was delighted to reveal that Leighton Baines and James McCarthy are fit to face Swansea City after the pair overcame ankle and groin injuries respectively after spending weeks on the treatment table.

The Dutchman, as mentioned, is without veteran midfielder Barry due to suspension, while Mo Besic and Matthew Pennington remain sidelined with long-term injuries.

For Swansea, Bob Bradley should have a fully fit first-team squad to choose from if Nathan Dyer recovers from his own ankle knock. Fellow winger Jefferson Montero is also expected to feature despite sustaining a broken hand against United 14 days ago.

Predicted Everton Line Up: Stekelenburg; Coleman, Jagielka, Williams, Oviedo; Gueye, Cleverley; Bolasie, Barkley, Mirallas; Lukaku.

Predicted Swansea Line Up: Fabianski; Naughton, Van der Hoorn, Fernandez, Taylor; Ki, Britton; Barrow, Sigurdsson, Montero; Baston.

Prediction

With both sides having had two weeks to dwell on their last league outings, each will be going all out to secure a massive three points for their respective league aims.

Everton will no doubt be classed as favourites for this one and, having had 14 days to perpare his charges for a clash on home turf, Koeman will be expecting the Toffees to record a victory over the reeling Swans.

Bradley will be hoping that two weeks' worth of training for his non-international stars will have helped them become more accustomed to his style of play, and the American will be desperate to secure his first triumph as Swans boss.

With the Welsh outfit looking defensively suspect, however, and with Everton unbeaten at Goodison this term, it's difficult to look past a home win.

Prediction: Everton 2-1 Swansea City
