Lluis Cortes' Barcelona team beat Chelsea in the 2020-21 Champions League final

Former Barcelona manager Lluis Cortes has been appointed manager of Saudi Arabia's women's team.

Cortes won the 2020-21 Women's Champions League with Barcelona as well as two top-flight titles.

He was named Uefa's women's coach of the year as Barcelona won a league, cup and Champions League Treble in 2020-21.

Cortes, 37, had most recently been managing Ukraine and joins 172nd-ranked Saudi Arabia, who played their first game in 2022, on a contract until 2027.

He takes over from Finnish manager Rosa Lappi-Seppala, who has led the team since February.

Saudi Arabia are bidding to host the 2026 Women's Asian Cup and will be looking to qualify for the 2027 Women's World Cup.

The first season of the domestic Saudi Women's Premier League started in October.
