Ex-Liverpool & Auxerre Star Retires From Football for Second Time to Pursue Alternative Career

Published on: 06 February 2017

Djibril Cisse has announced his retirement from professional football for the second time after being unable to find a new club.

The 35-year-old has called time on his playing career after he decided to renege on his original decision to call it a day back in October 2015 but, after being unable to land a contract with a professional club, has opted to hang up his boots and pursue other ventures.

In an interview with Yahoo Sports in France, Cisse explained that he no longer saw a reason to remain in the game, despite admitting that he harboured ambitions of becoming a footballer once more.

He said: I loved being a footballer, and so far the ball has been my life. I would have liked to continue playing but I must admit today that football is over.

With the same passion, I will devote myself wholeheartedly to my career as DJ, producer and consultant, as well as developing my clothing brand (Mr Lenoir).

That you for all your support. The adventure continues, another life begins. A lion never dies.

Cisse had initially been forced to retire from football after a problematic hip injury curtailed his career 15 months ago. However, successful surgery on the issue allowed him to return, and the ex-striker had hoped to find a new team to play for.

Cisse's search for a new home, though, did not materialise and the former France international will now look to make a name for himself in the fashion and music industry as a result. Cisse will also work for Yahoo Sports in his homeland.

The former forward began his playing career in France with AC Arles, and also plied his trade with French outfit Nimes before he completed a free transfer to Auxerre in July 1998.

Cisse plundered 71 goals in 143 appearances and, as a result, joined Liverpool in the summer of 2004 for around £14.5m. His spell at Anfield last just two years, however, before he was shipped off to Marseille - initially on loan in the summer of 2006 - in July 2007 for around £7.5m.

His career became nomadic from that point on, and took in spells at Sunderland, Lazio, Queens Park Rangers, Kuban Krasnodar and Bastia before his hip injury put paid to his time on the pitch.

The 41-times capped France international won six trophies during his career, including the 2005 Champions League with Liverpool.
