Ex-Liverpool Flop is Now Rubbing Shoulders With Barcelona and Real Madrid Superstars in La Liga

Iago Aspas is widely remembered as one of the worst Liverpool signings of the last few years - there have certainly been enough of them - but the Spanish forward is now rubbing shoulders with La Liga's elite goalscorers since moving back home.

Aspas, who scored for Spain against England in an international friendly at Wembley in November, netted his 11th La Liga goal of the season and assisted another during Celta Vigo's 3-1 win over Malaga on Sunday evening.

He's now scored the same number of league goals in 2016/17 as Cristiano Ronaldo, four more than Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann, just one fewer than former Liverpool team-mate Luis Suarez, and only two less than top scorerLionel Messi.

It's a far cry from the player who failed to score even once in 14 Premier League appearances during his short-lived Anfield career in 2013/14.

Aspas arrived at Liverpool off the back of respectable yet unspectacular season in La Liga after earlier helping Celta earn promotion in 2012. He'd spent hiscareer prior to that in the Spanish second tier and in hindsight it's perhaps little wonder he struggled tosettle in England.

He was subsequently loaned to Sevilla in the summer of 2014, but only scored twice in 16 La Liga appearances for the cluband was largely a peripheral figure in the club's Europa League triumph that season.

A return to Celta, the club he first joined at the age of eight, followed and Aspas, now 29, has finally found his groove. His 14 La Liga goals in 2015/16 marked the best top flight tally of his career to date and he's currently just three shy of matching that in barely half a season.

And while a Pichichi Trophy (awarded to La Liga's top scorer) might be out of reach, the Zarra Trophy, given to the top scoring Spanish player each season, is entirely possible.Aritz Aduriz, Diego Costa, Alvaro Negredo, Roberto Soldado and David Villa have won it in recent years.
