Former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is set to make a return to management following his sabbatical, according toThe Sun.

The Dutchman has resisted offers since leaving United in the summer, and was considered for the Belgium job before Roberto Martinez claimed the role.

Former Holland and Bayern Munich manager Van Gaal cannot speak about his time with the Red Devils until the summer, and is reportedly keen to keep a low profile until then.

The 65-year-old has previously held roles as a technical director, performing the job at Ajax before resigning after a series of disagreements with Ronald Koeman who was in charge of the Dutch giants at the time. However, it is understood van Gaal favours a return to management over a potential directorial position.

During his time at United, Van Gaal made the club tough to beat but fans endured frustrating games throughout his tenure.

Frequently underwhelming going forward, chiefs at Old Trafford lost patience with Van Gaal after the club finished fifth last season, despite winning the FA Cup, and elected to sack the Dutchmanand bring in Jose Mourinho.

The club had qualified for the Champions League during Van Gaal's first season but failed to qualify from the group during the following season.

Mourinho has fared little better than his peer with the team currently in sixth position in the Premier League, whileMourinho has a worse record than either Van Gaal or David Moyes during their first 16 games in charge.

United are currently13 points behind joint leaders Arsenal and Chelsea, the latter of whom entertain West Brom on Sunday.
