EXCLUSIVE: Striker Kwesi Wriedt handed Ghana call-up after three-year absence for South Africa and Sao Tome games

Footballghana.com can confirm that Holland-based striker Kwesi Wriedt is making his return to the Ghana national team squad for the first time in three years.

The Willem II attacker has been named in the Black Stars squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against South Africa and Sao Tomé & Principe.

The 26-year-old has been called up by coach Charles Akonnor for the must-win game against the Bafana Bafana at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg next week.

The former Bayern Munich striker is returning to the squad for the first time in three years after other strikers were preferred in previous matches for the Black Stars.

His last appearance was in 2018 under former coach James Kwesi Appiah.

Wriedt has played two international matches for the four-time African champions so far.

Akonnor does not want to take chances after naming the hugely talented striker in his squad for the double-header later this month.

It had been speculated that the bulk of his squad will be dominated by home-based players because of the reluctance of European clubs over the coronavirus pandemic.

But it appears that will not be the story for Wriedt whose club officials have told Ghanasoccernet.com that the Holland-based striker is in the squad.

Akonnor is expected to announce his final squad on Friday after rectification by the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association.
